Punt

If the ultimate goal of the offense is to score a touchdown they have to accomplish the immediate goal of getting a first down. If after 3 downs the offense has not progressed 10 yards from the starting point they have the option to punt the ball to the other team. A punt is a special teams kicking action where the punter will kick the ball to the opposing teams punt returner who will try to advance the ball against the kicking teams punt return defense. At the moment a punt return for touchdown is not possible.
